According to Hegseth, any potential peace negotiations will involve both leaders directly, with Trump playing a key role in the talks.

As reported by the Polish Press Agency (PAP), when asked about NATO’s European allies’ involvement, Hegseth stated that while Trump will lead negotiations with both countries’ leaders, NATO and its European members will also play a role, and any potential peace deal will include multiple parties.

Following two days of meetings with European counterparts at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Hegseth emphasized that the U.S. continues to support Ukraine but suggested that future funding could become part of peace negotiations. He stated that Ukraine is unlikely to regain its pre-2014 borders and that a negotiated peace will require certain concessions. In his view, Trump has full control over the negotiations.

Hegseth also urged European allies to increase their defense spending to 5% of GDP, arguing that NATO’s survival depends on member states taking greater responsibility for their own security.
