The attack tore through at least five districts of the Ukrainian capital, igniting fires and trapping residents in damaged apartment buildings. Kyiv's military administration said the death toll and injury count were preliminary and could rise.
"The capital is being attacked with ballistic missiles. Take cover!" Mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote on Telegram as the strikes hit.
The assault came hours after a three-day halt in attacks on Kyiv and Moscow expired. Russia and Ukraine had agreed to the pause over the weekend to accommodate a visit by U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who met with officials in Moscow and then Kyiv.
Russian state news agency TASS confirmed late Monday that the moratorium had ended. Talks aimed at ending the war — now in its fifth year since Russia's full-scale invasion — produced no apparent breakthrough, according to the report.
Structural damage was reported across the city. In the Holosiivskyi district, a strike tore into the 23rd floor of a 26-story residential tower. Elsewhere, rescuers freed two people trapped in an apartment inside a 16-story building after a blast wave caused damage there. In the Solomianskyi district, people were reported trapped in a five-story residential building.
Klitschko said a fire also broke out at a university in Holosiivskyi and that people were feared trapped beneath the rubble of a nearby residential building. He said fires had broken out in non-residential buildings in several other parts of the city, and that six people were injured, three of whom paramedics took to the hospital.
Kyiv's military administration confirmed additional casualties and damage in its own statement Tuesday morning: "Unfortunately, there is information about two people killed as a result of the enemy attack, and the number of wounded has risen to seven". Residential buildings and an educational facility were among the structures hit, the administration said, adding that people may still be trapped in one building.
The Ukrainian Air Force had warned ahead of the strikes that Russia was preparing to launch missiles and jet-powered drones at Kyiv and the surrounding region. Separately, emergency responders said Russian drones struck a logistics center and industrial facilities overnight in the Fastiv and Boryspil districts outside the capital; firefighters extinguished the resulting fires.
The Air Force also reported missiles fired toward Odesa as part of a broader wave of strikes across Ukraine. Officials said they were still assessing casualties and damage in other regions.
The attack's shockwaves were felt beyond Ukraine's borders: authorities in Poland's Lubelskie and Podkarpackie provinces issued two rounds of alerts through the national Government Security Center in response to the assault.
