Marcin Przydacz was speaking in an interview with the state-run TVP Info news channel on Tuesday evening.

Earlier in the day, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the EU was proposing new sanctions against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.

The new measures include an import ban on coal worth EUR 4 billion per year, a full transaction embargo on four key Russian banks, a ban on Russian vessels and Russian-operated vessels accessing EU ports, and targeted export and import bans, according to news outlets.

‘We need to go much further’

Przydacz told TVP Info that “Poland had advocated for much farther-reaching sanctions, not just on coal, but above all on oil, as well as gas.”

He said there was a need for “a brave political decision, not half-measures,” the state PAP news agency reported.

He welcomed the proposed ban on Russian coal, but added: “We should be going much, much further in order to cut off Vladimir Putin’s oxygen supply, cut off the financial resources with which he buys weapons and finances the war in Ukraine.”

Sanctions require unanimity from all 27 members of the EU.

Wednesday is day 42 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
