The observation was made on Monday by the dziennik.pl website, which cited the American think tank, Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Ukraine counterattacks in Severodonetsk
In its daily assessment of the Russo-Ukrainian war, ISW wrote: “Ukrainian forces continued to conduct limited and localised but successful counter attacks against Russian positions throughout Ukraine on June 5, including retaking large areas of Severodonetsk—the city in Luhansk Oblast the Kremlin has concentrated the majority of its forces on capturing,” as cited by dziennik.pl.
ISW added: “The ability of Ukrainian forces to successfully counterattack in Severodonetsk, the Kremlin’s current priority area of operations, further indicates the declining combat power of Russian forces in Ukraine,” dziennik.pl reported.
Another Russian general reported killed
Meanwhile, Ukraine on Sunday reportedly killed Russian Major General Roman Kutuzov, dziennik.pl wrote.
According to ISW, “high-level Russian commanders have taken remarkably high losses during combat in Ukraine, and will likely continue to do so as the Russian command continues to deploy military leadership directly to the frontline.”
“Kutuzov’s death has not yet been confirmed but would be at least the seventh death of a general in Ukraine since the beginning of the war,” the American think tank wrote, as quoted by dziennik.pl.
Russian missiles hit Kyiv
At the same time, Russia on Sunday launched the first rocket attack on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv in weeks, dziennik.pl noted.
According to Ukraine, the missiles hit rail infrastructure, while Russia claims it had targeted the T-72 tanks provided to Ukraine by fellow Eastern European countries.
ISW commented: “This attack on Kyiv likely indicates that Russian forces are continuing to target Ukrainian infrastructure in non-critical areas of Ukraine in order to disrupt Ukrainian logistics as Russian forces take considerable losses in Donbas,” as cited by dziennik.pl.
Monday is day 103 of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
