A Polish government official has said that social media giants such as Twitter and Facebook should ban Russian diplomats from their platforms to help the fight against the Kremlin's propaganda and disinformation.

Janusz Cieszyński, Poland’s digital secretary of state, said in a media interview published this week that Russian ambassadors were “only lying and putting disinformation" in their social media accounts.

"It is of no value to anyone apart from them,” Cieszyński said in an interview with the Politico news service.

He appealed: “Take them down; they’re propaganda officers of an aggressive regime responsible for thousands of people killed, for the massacres of civilians."

After the European Union banned state-sponsored media outlets RT, formerly known as Russia Today, and Sputnik, Moscow has in recent months increasingly used its embassies' widely followed accounts to disseminate its propaganda, Politico reported.

More than 40 United Nations members, including Poland, Britain and the United States, this week condemned Russia for abusing its UN Security Council seat to spread disinformation about neighbouring countries and distort history for political purposes, according to Poland's UN Ambassador Krzysztof Szczerski.
