Both Poles and Ukrainian refugees have been encouraged to lay flowers and place vigil lights at a special memorial, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

The Kraków authorities said in a statement on Wednesday that residents traditionally flocked to the city’s cemeteries around All Saints’ Day on November 1 to visit the graves of their loved ones.

They added: “At this special time, we mustn’t forget about our guests from Ukraine, who have left their homes and families, and many are unable to return to their homeland to pay tribute to the deceased.”

Special memorial for victims of Ukraine war

To offer refugees from Ukraine an opportunity to remember their lost loved ones, a special place of remembrance has been created at the Rakowicki cemetery, officials told reporters.

The site offers people a chance to pay tribute to the victims of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, according to officials.

Kraków City Hall said in its statement: “It’s a special memorial place where Ukrainian refugees will be able to symbolically light vigil lights and lay flowers, together with their friends, in a moment of silence and reflection. Cracovians will also have an opportunity to pay tribute to all those who have fallen as a result of the Russian assault on Ukraine.”

The site will be adorned with a Ukrainian flag and a plaque saying: “Here you can light a vigil light and lay flowers in memory of the fallen loved ones of Ukrainian families, as well as pay homage to all the victims of Russia's aggression against Ukraine,” the PAP news agency reported.

Wednesday was day 245 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
