The attack was carried out with the Iranian-made Shahed loitering drones, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
Serhii Popko, the head of Kyiv’s city military administration, said on the Telegram social messaging app: “All air targets were detected and destroyed on the approach to Kyiv in a timely manner by air defense forces,” as quoted by The Kyiv Independent website.
As of 8 a.m. CET, no casualties or damage were reported after the strike, according to officials.
Popko said the exact consequences of the night-time assault were still being determined, The Kyiv Independent reported.
It represented the sixth Russian air attack on Kyiv this month, following a series of strikes at the time of the NATO summit on July 11-12, Britain’s The Telegraph newspaper reported.
Tuesday’s assault also came a day after drones struck Moscow, one of them hitting a ministry of defence building believed to host Russia’s notorious cyber forces, according to The Telegraph.
The Russian foreign ministry warned of “tough retaliatory measures,” news outlets reported.
Meanwhile, a Ukrainian defence source said the attack on Moscow had been a “special operation” conducted by Ukraine’s military-intelligence agency, according to US broadcaster CBS News.
Ukraine had earlier vowed to retaliate for the Russian strike on the Ukrainian Black Sea port of Odesa on Sunday, which had killed two people and inflicted serious damage on the city’s historic Orthodox cathedral, CBS News reported.
Russia shells seven communities in Ukraine’s Sumy region
Meanwhile, Russia also shelled seven communities in Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region on Monday, firing more than 100 rounds from various weaponry, including artillery, mortars and grenades, The Kyiv Independent reported.
Two apartment buildings, two private residences and a warehouse were damaged in the province’s Bilopillia community, but there were no casualties, according to officials.
Russian forces also bombarded the communities of Krasnopillia, Khotin, Yunakivka, Velyka Pysarivka, Nova Sloboda, and Seredyna-Buda, The Kyiv Independent reported.
Ukraine’s Sumy region, which borders Russia, has been targeted with shelling and attacks from across the frontier on a daily basis, since parts of the province were retaken from the invading Russian troops in April last year, according to the website.
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.
Tuesday is day 517 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
