The attack began at 0.50 a.m. on Monday, targeting a nine-storey residential block in downtown Kherson, the Ukrainska Pravda website reported.
As a result of three separate strikes, a 59-year-old-woman was killed and twelve more people injured, according to officials.
Two rescue workers were injured while putting out the fire caused by the Russian attack, Ukrainska Pravda reported.
Oleksandr Prokudin, head of the military administration in the Kherson region, wrote on the social messaging app Telegram: "Tough night in Kherson. The Russian army continued to fire on Kherson residents' homes in the central part of the city."
Ukraine’s Zelensky hails Western air defence systems
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has praised the Western-provided air defence systems for helping his country fight the Russian invasion.
He commended the performance of the US-made Patriot missiles and the IRIS-T systems, produced by several countries led by Germany.
In a video address to the nation on Sunday night, Zelensky said: “Today, I heard a report on the use of advanced air defense systems - Patriots and IRIS-T, which we received from our partners - by our warriors. I am grateful to every country, every leader who helped us with them! These are powerful systems, very effective... They have already yielded significant results.”
He added: “Every success of our warriors is a reassurance to the world that a terrorist state is not able to undermine common security.”
Russia fired 178 drones, 65 missiles at Ukraine in past week: Zelensky
Zelensky told the nation: “In this week alone, Russian terrorists have already used 65 different missiles and 178 attack drones against us, including 87 "Shaheds". We managed to shoot down a significant number of them.”
Ukraine’s president vowed: “We will do our best to make the Ukrainian sky shield only stronger. Here, in our skies, we can prove that terror is losing.”
His words came after a Russian guided aerial bomb hit a blood transfusion centre in the town of Kupiansk in Ukraine's eastern Kharkivregion late on Saturday.
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.
Monday is day 528 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
