Russia launched a missile attack on Ukraine’s southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia on Wednesday night, killing two people and injuring a further seven, authorities have said.
The strike hit a residential area of Zaporizhzhia around 8 p.m. local time, the Ukrainska Pravda website reported, citing local officials.
As a result, two people were killed and seven injured, according to Ukrainian authorities, the Reuters news agency reported.
Officials earlier said there had been three casualties.
"Fortunately, one person was resuscitated. Doctors were assisted by police paramedics at the scene," stated Ukraine’s Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko.
Andrii Yermak, the head of the Office of Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, said that according to preliminary reports, Russia had attacked Zaporizhzhia with Iskander missiles.
"The strike was on the territory of the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine," Yermak added on the Telegram social messaging app, as quoted by Ukrainska Pravda.
President Zelensky posted a video of the aftermath of the attack, showing smoke billowing from burning and badly damaged buildings next to a church, the Reuters news agency reported.
Zelensky wrote on Telegram: “The rescue operation is underway. All victims will be provided with the necessary assistance. And this war crime of Russia will certainly face its sentence. And the response to Russian terrorists will be on the frontline - thanks to our heroic warriors.”
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.
Thursday is day 533 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
