The assault lasted three hours, the Ukrainska Pravda website reported.

Russia targeted the Izmail district of the Odesa province, causing damage and killing at least one person, according to officials.

Oleh Kiper, the head of the regional military administration, said: ”Unfortunately, one person was killed. An employee from an agricultural business was seriously injured and died in hospital."

He added that the attack had caused destruction and fires in several settlements, and there was also damage to port and agricultural infrastructure, such as grain elevators, administrative buildings and agricultural businesses, according to Ukrainska Pravda.

The port of Izmail on the Danube river, which borders NATO member Romania, has become the main export route for Ukrainian products after Russia quit the United Nations-backed Black Sea Grain Initiative in July, Britain’s The Guardian newspaper reported.

On Monday, Russia launched a drone strike on the port of Izmail, damaging storage facilities and setting buildings on fire.

After leaving the Black Sea grain deal, Russia began a series of strikes on Ukraine’s infrastructure and ports on the Black Sea and the Danube, which are vital for agriculture exports, The Guardian noted.

Ukraine repels Russian missile attack on Kyiv: officials

Meanwhile, Russia also fired missiles at the Ukrainian capital Kyiv early on Wednesday, but air defences shot them all down, the city’s military administration said.

"Another missile attack by the enemy on a peaceful city with the aim of killing the civilian population and destroying the infrastructure," Serhiy Popko, head of Kyiv's military administration, said on the Telegram messaging app, as quoted by The Guardian.

There was no immediate damage or casualties reported in Kyiv, according to the Reuters news agency.

In its 18-month-long war against Ukraine, Russia has frequently launched air attacks on Kyiv and other places in Ukraine far from the frontline, Reuters reported.

Wednesday is day 560 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.
