The deadly strike happened overnight into Monday, the Reuters news agency reported.
In the past 24 hours, Russian forces had carried out 71 attacks, from land and air, on Kherson province, aiming “at the residential districts” as well as shops and medical infrastructure and other facilities, regional governor Oleksandr Prokudin said on the Telegram social messaging app.
Twenty of the strikes targeted the regional capital Kherson City, the governor added.
Authorities extinguished a fire caused by the attack on Monday morning, according to officials.
In November 2022, Ukrainian forces liberated parts of the Kherson region, including its capital, but Russian troops continued shelling Kherson City and the surrounding areas from across the Dnipro river, Britain’s The Guardian newspaper reported.
Ukrainian air defences also brought down three Russian unmanned aerial vehicles over the central Kryvyi Rih district, the Ukrainska Pravda website reported.
Ukraine continues counteroffensive against Russia in east, south: officials
Meanwhile, there were 38 combat engagements between Ukrainian and Russian forces over the past 24 hours, the General Staff in Kyiv said on Monday morning.
Ukrainian forces repelled Russian attacks in the eastern regions of Luhansk and Donetsk, according to officials.
Ukrainian forces also continued their counteroffensive against Russia, towards the port of Melitopol in the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region and near the city of Bakhmut in Donetsk province, the General Staff in Kyiv said.
Ukraine’s military command added that Ukrainian troops were “inflicting losses in military personnel and equipment on the Russian occupying forces, further consolidating their positions and exhausting the Russians.”
In the past 24 hours, Ukraine's air force conducted 13 attacks on clusters of Russian military personnel, weapons and equipment, according to officials.
Ukraine's rocket forces destroyed a Russian anti-aircraft missile system, a Russian command post, a Russian ammunition storage point and 16 Russian artillery pieces, the Ukrainian General Staff also reported.
Under its current counteroffensive against Russia, Ukraine is seeking to encircle and recapture Bakhmut in the east, while also pushing through Zaporizhzhia in the southeast, in a bid to reach the port of Melitopol on the Sea of Azov, splitting Russian forces, according to news outlets.
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.
Monday is day 586 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
