The latest update was provided by Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, Commander of Ukraine’s Tavriia Operational and Strategic Group of Forces, on Tuesday night, the Ukrainska Pravda website reported.

Tarnavskyi said on the Telegram social messaging app that his troops were “advancing on the Tavriia front.”

He added that Ukraine’s artillery forces had completed 1,198 firing missions on this front over the past 24 hours.

Over the last day, enemy losses amounted to 261 people, in particular, 10 occupiers surrendered,” Tarnavsky also said.

He added that Ukraine’s troops had destroyed 20 pieces of Russian military equipment, including one tank, two armoured personnel carriers, seven artillery systems, five vehicles and five special vehicles, as well as eight Russian ammunition storage points, Ukrainska Pravda reported.

Tavriia is a subregion of southern Ukraine between the Dnipro and Molochna rivers and the Crimean peninsula.

Meanwhile, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said that Kyiv’s air force had conducted 17 strikes on Russian targets over the past day.

Overall, Ukrainian forces on Tuesday continued their counteroffensive operations near the eastern city of Bakhmut and in the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region, the Institute for the Study of War, a US think tank, reported.

Ukrainian troops conducted counteroffensive operations in the direction of the port of Melitopol in Zaporizhzhia and in the Bakhmut direction, according to the General Staff in Kyiv.

Russian sources claimed that Ukrainian forces continued ground attacks near Klishchiivka (7 km southwest of Bakhmut) and Andriivka (10 km south of Bakhmut) and on the Kopani-Robotyne-Verbove line in the Zaporizhzhia region, the ISW reported.

Ukraine's president visits troops in the northeast

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday visited soldiers in the northeast of the country, one of the hottest fronts in Kyiv’s fight against the Russian invasion, the Reuters news agency reported.

In his nightly address to the nation, Zelensky said he had been in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second city, and the surrounding region, discussing the battlefield situation with commanders.

He added: “I heard a report from General Syrskyi [the commander of Ukraine’s ground forces], as well as from the heads of the regional Security Service of Ukraine and the National Police – detailed reports on the protection of the Kharkiv region.”

Syrskyi briefed the president on defence in the area and on offensive actions further south, near Bakhmut, Reuters reported.

Zelensky said: “It is extremely important that Kharkiv, despite everything, does not just hold on, but helps keep our entire east strong.”

He added on social media he had also visited brigades fighting near the northeastern towns of Kupiansk and Lyman.

The president wrote: "We met with brigade and battalion commanders to discuss the battlefield situation, pressing issues, and needs.”

Ukraine recaptured Kupiansk and Lyman late last year. In recent months, the area has been subject to Russian attacks, according to Reuters.

Zelensky said he had also handed out awards to soldiers who distinguished themselves.

During his visit to northeastern Ukraine, Zelensky discussed preparations for winter as Kyiv expects an escalation of Russian strikes on energy infrastructure, including in Kharkiv, a major industrial centre, Reuters reported.

Wednesday is day 588 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.
