The distinctions were handed out by the head of the presidential National Security Bureau (BBN), Jacek Siewiera, at a ceremony on Thursday, public broadcaster Polish Radio's IAR news agency reported.

The awards went to doctors, nurses, medical rescue workers and volunteers from the Polish Prime Minister's Office, the Border Guard agency, the Polish Medical Air Rescue (LPR) and the Humanosh Foundation, according to officials.

At the ceremony at Warsaw's Belweder Palace, Siewiera paid tribute to their work, praising their "courage, extraordinary skill and professionalism" in providing medical care "to the people of war-torn Ukraine."

He also said that they went "above and beyond" what was expected of medics, "providing help in the most difficult conditions, during war and crisis," the PAP news agency reported.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.

Friday is day 625 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
