Ostatnia aktualizacja: 21.06.2023 15:45
“It is our common responsibility. Belarusians, Ukrainians, and also the West have to prevent the deployment of Russian nuclear weapons in Belarus. This is a huge threat to Belarusian sovereignty. However, this matter concerns also the interests of the entire international community”, emphasized the leader of the Belarusian opposition, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, in an interview with the Polish Radio portal, PolskieRadio24.pl. She stressed that this issue should be discussed at the UN General Assembly and the UN Security Council.

"Let me start by saying that neither we nor our international partners have fully proven information that nuclear weapons are already deployed in Belarus. Alyaksandr Lukashenka and Vladimir Putin contradict each other in their statements on this subject," Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya stressed in a special In an interview for Polish Radio website PolskieRadio24.pl.

The President of independent Belarus, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya was asked by the Polish Radio website PolskieRadio24.pl to comment on the announcements of Alyaksandr Lukashenka and Vladimir Putin regarding their plans to deploy tactical nuclear weapons of Russia in Belarus.

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya warned that Putin and Lukashenka are trying to blackmail the West so that it would stop supporting Ukraine.

- In my opinion, the dictators could have considered that raising the topic of nuclear weapons, on the one hand, could be a tool of threats against the Belarusian nation, and on the other hand, it is intended to induce Western states to stop supporting Ukraine and to make some deals with Lukashenka and Putin to The West began to talk to them, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya noted.

- But I think that honest talks with dictators are not possible. When they say "peace", they start a war. The two of them cannot provide consistent information, even on who will control nuclear weapons, she stressed.

"Belarus can be a target of retaliatory attack"

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya stressed that in the case  of deployment of nuclear weapons in Belarus, her homeland would become the target of a retaliatory attack.

“Lukashenka tells Belarusians that nuclear weapons mean security, because he always looks for external enemies, and points to, for example, Poland and Lithuania, Ukraine. Thus, nuclear weapons would be - according to him - like a protective umbrella. Its possible deployment in Belarus, however, would make us the target of a possible retaliatory attack”, she stressed.

“Now it is our joint responsibility: the responsibility of Belarusians, Ukrainians, the West, that the deployment of nuclear weapons does not take place, to prevent it. This is a huge threat to our sovereignty. I want to emphasize that by deploying these weapons, Russia can secure its presence in Belarus for many, many years to come. The deployment of nuclear weapons also affects the interests of the international community and should be discussed at the UN General Assembly and the UN Security Council, stressed Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya
