He had been suffering a long and serious illness.
Friends from his days in the anti-communist opposition praised his honesty and described him as a decent human being.
Wujec was repeatedly detained by the communist regime, including when Poland’s strongman leader Gen. Wojciech Jaruzelski imposed martial law on December 13, 1981 to stifle rising opposition, headed by the Solidarity movement.
After communism fell in Poland in 1989, Wujec became a member of parliament and an advisor to former President Bronisław Komorowski.
