A total of 231 MPs late on Thursday voted to defeat a no-confidence motion put forward against Education Minister Przemysław Czarnek by the opposition.

Meanwhile, 218 deputies supported the motion, and one abstained, state news agency PAP reported.

The bid had little chance of succeeding because the country’s governing conservatives hold a majority in parliament.

The vote came after the opposition accused Czarnek of incompetence, fund misuse and ideological bias in a renewed effort to remove him from office.

Conservative politicians including Deputy Prime Minister and Culture Minister Piotr Gliński defended Czarnek in parliament on Thursday, saying the minister was "one of the most hardworking" members of the government.

"Minister Czarnek is carrying out the programme of the Polish government very efficiently and reliably in line with our social mandate," Gliński told the house.
