The appointment was announced after Duda's previous top foreign policy adviser, Marcin Przydacz, became a member of parliament, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

At a ceremony in the presidential palace on Monday, Duda said he was glad that Pawlak was “ready to take responsibility for overseeing international affairs” in the presidential office.

He named Pawlak as the new head of his International Policy Bureau.

Pawlak’s previous role was as a deputy foreign policy advisor to Duda.

Przydacz stepped down from his position as Duda’s top foreign policy advisor after winning a seat in the lower house of parliament in the October 15 election, the PAP news agency reported.

Przydacz will now serve as an MP with the conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party.

The president congratulated Przydacz on becoming an MP and thanked him for “carrying out important missions in terms of Poland’s interests, the country's position on the international stage and strengthening national security.”

Duda praised Przydacz for "conducting these missions with responsibility, resilience and determination,” adding that he looked forward to “further good cooperation.”

The president also decorated Przydacz with the Knight’s Cross of the Polonia Restituta Order, a top state honour, for the aide's "outstanding contribution to public service,” the presidential office said.

Duda bestowed the same honour on his environmental advisor Paweł Sałek, who has also become a lawmaker for the Law and Justice party, the PAP news agency reported.
