About 1.6 million students from five Polish provinces began their winter break on Friday. The holidays take place at a different date in other regions.
Poland’s chief road transport inspector, Alvin Gajadhur, said that checks would be particularly intense in southern parts of Poland which are popular destinations for skiing trips.
More than 250 people were killed in road accidents in Poland during last year's winter school holidays, while 174 people under the age of 14 were injured, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.
Many parents take their children skiing during the winter school holidays, while others send their offspring on organized trips to mountain resorts by coach.
