The shipment, paid for by Polish copper giant KGHM, comes after Poland's President Andrzej Duda this week held a phone talk with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping to discuss medical supplies, officials have said.

The Dreamliner plane operated by Polish national airline LOT is expected to bring USD 5.5 million worth of equipment to help combat the COVID-19 disease, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

The cargo includes nearly 20 modern respirators, a batch of protective gowns and masks and 200,000 pairs of medical goggles, the news agency said.

It cited KGHM CEO Marcin Chludziński as saying that Poland would receive more respirators and medical supplies from China on March 31.

The foreign ministry in Warsaw said last week that China would supply Poland with thousands of test kits, face masks and other protective gear, such as suits and gloves, as part of efforts to contain the coronavirus epidemic.

“Although the battle with coronavirus in China is not over yet, the country decided to show solidarity with Poland and assist us with a supply of test kits to uncover COVID-19 and protective medical products,” the Polish foreign ministry said in a statement at the time.

The announcement followed a phone conversation between Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz and the Chinese ambassador in Warsaw, Liu Guangyuan, according to the gov.pl website.
