Deputies are also expected to consider a proposed new “Good Samaritan” rule under which medical staff who have to treat COVID-19 patients will not be punished if they make mistakes.

Health Minister Adam Niedzielski has said that medical staff who are not infectious-disease specialists will be brought in to help fight the epidemic, which has seen the number of new cases double recently over the course of a week.

Niedzielski also announced that his ministry would transform some district hospitals into facilities to treat coronavirus patients.

He said that thanks to such a move, Poland would have 10,000 extra beds for COVID-19 patients.

Meanwhile, public broadcaster Polish Radio reported that temporary hospitals are to be built in major cities around the country to treat coronavirus patients.

The first such facility is being set up the National Stadium in Warsaw, and will initially have 500 beds.

Niedzielski warned on Monday that Poland could later this week see 15,000 to 20,000 new infections a day.

Officials on Monday reported 7,482 new coronavirus infections and 41 more deaths, bringing its total number of cases to 183,248 and fatalities to 3,614.
