Russian President Vladimir Putin in the early hours of Thursday morning announced a "special military operation" against Ukraine to eliminate what he said was a serious threat against his country, the Reuters news agency reported.

"The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemns Russia's unprecedented military aggression against Ukraine," the Polish foreign ministry said in a statement on Thursday morning.

It added that Russia "has deliberately decided to destroy the foundations of the existing security architecture and to attempt to change borders by force, which cannot be accepted in the 21st century."

"Poland, in cooperation with its allies, will take all action provided for by international law to support Ukraine and stop Russian aggression," the Polish foreign ministry also said in its statement.

Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau in a tweet condemned "Russia's military action against Ukraine" and called on Moscow "to stop all military action immediately and return to diplomacy."

He warned that "the lives of millions of people" were being put "at grave risk."

Earlier on Thursday, Poland's President Andrzej Duda condemned "an unprovoked and unjustified Russian attack" on Ukraine.

Poland’s Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki on Thursday morning called on the West to make an immediate response to “Russia’s criminal aggression against Ukraine.”
