The reading was a notch lower than a preliminary estimate of 5.3 percent for April issued by the country's labour ministry earlier this month.
There were around 878,000 people without jobs across the nation at the end of April, compared with 902,100 a month earlier, according to the Central Statistical Office.
According to the European Union’s Eurostat statistics agency, which uses a different methodology, unemployment in Poland was a modest 3 percent in March, unchanged from February and one of the lowest rates in the 27-nation European Union.
