"The Ukrainians are defending themselves, but they are also fighting for us, and it is our duty to help them," Jarosław Kaczyński said at a meeting with supporters of his governing conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party on Saturday.
He told his audience that Poland should work to "build a very good future with Ukraine" because if the two nations "begin to work together in earnest and on a permanent basis," they "will form a great force to be reckoned with in both the east and west."
'Forget and forgive'
Kaczyński said during the meeting in the north-central Polish city of Toruń that Poland and Ukraine "share a difficult history" but "are on the right track to put the past behind" them and "to truly forget and forgive as Christians are supposed to do."
He also told the meeting that Poland was "doing everything" to help Ukraine export its grain to the world.
These efforts are needed because "if there is a shortage of grain in Africa, people living there may be prompted to migrate to Europe," Kaczyński said.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned on Friday that Russia's war against Ukraine could plunge up to 50 million people across the world into hunger.
