The ceremony took place after Łukasiewicz's ashes were brought to Warsaw the previous night from Dublin, where he died in 1956.

Born in 1878 in what is now Lviv, Ukraine, Łukasiewicz developed a fine academic career centering on philosophical and mathematical logic.

In 1919, he left his post as a Warsaw University professor to serve as Minister of Religious Denominations and Public Education in the government of newly independent Poland, under Prime Minister Ignacy Jan Paderewski.

During his brief stint in government, Łukasiewicz led an effort to develop a modern Polish school curriculum to replace Russian, German and Austrian curricula used during the over 120-year period when Poland was under foreign rule.

Jan Dziedziczak, a member of the Polish delegation for Monday’s ceremonies in Dublin, told the media that "the return to Poland of the remains of Prof. Jan Łukasiewicz, a prominent Pole, is the fulfilment of the duty that the Republic of Poland owes towards its illustrious citizens.”

Dziedziczak, who is in charge of relations with the Polish community abroad in the current Polish government of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, added: “We want to ensure that those who dreamt of a free and independent Poland and served the Polish cause can return to their homeland … It so happened that Prof. Jan Łukasiewicz took the opportunity to work in Ireland in order to avoid repression in communist Poland. Today, 66 years later, he is returning to a free Poland. We offer our thanks to him for his extraordinary life and service to the country.”

Łukasiewicz's reburial marks an important event for the community of Polish Armenians. The head of Poland’s Armenian Federation, Maciej Bohosiewicz, said that Łukasiewicz "belonged to the great family of Polish Armenians as a member of the famous Łuksjan family."

Around 1920, Łukasiewicz invented the so-called “Polish notation,” which is used today in most programming languages.

In 2008, the Polish Information Processing Society established the Jan Łukasiewicz Award, which is presented annually to the most innovative Polish IT companies.
