Andrzej Duda was scheduled to visit South Korea from Wednesday to Friday, including to attend the 2023 World Scout Jamboree, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

The trip was cancelled because of weather and the expected impact of the typhoon, the president’s office said on Monday.

Meanwhile, South Korea began evacuating the 36,000 scouts representing more than 150 countries from a campsite in the southwest of the country to safer areas ahead of the approaching Typhoon Khanun, the Reuters news agency reported on Tuesday morning.

The typhoon is expected to hit South Korea on Thursday, with winds blowing at up to 150 km an hour, according to weather forecasters.

The 535 Polish scouts and girl guides taking part in the 2023 World Scout Jamboree are safe and will be evacuated to a different location on Tuesday, according to officials.

Olga Junkuszew, spokeswoman for the Association of the Polish Scout Movement (ZHP), told the PAP news agency that the Polish teenage participants were “safe and taken care of” amid the heatwave and the expected impact of Typhoon Khanun.

The 2023 World Scout Jamboree runs from August 2 to 12.

The next edition of the global event, which is held by the World Organization of the Scout Movement every four years, is due to take place in Poland, the PAP news agency reported.
