The 32-minute report by Żaneta Walentyn investigates a series of tragic incidents at an addiction treatment centre in northern Poland, where two people committed suicide and one died during detox during the last six months.

The feature, produced by Radio Pomorza i Kujaw (PiK), a Polish Radio regional station based in the north-central city of Bydgoszcz, seeks to uncover why the centre failed its patients.

Walentyn's report includes interviews with the families of the deceased and highlights cases of patients dissatisfied with the centre's services.

Although a commission appointed by regional authorities accused the facility's staff of gross negligence, including failing to keep patients' medical records and sharing information via WhatsApp, prosecutors found no grounds for criminal charges and discontinued the investigation, according to Walentyn.

Established in 1987 by the European Parliament, the European Commission and the European Cultural Foundation, the Prix Europa has evolved into a premier European broadcasting festival.

It gives annual awards for the best European audio, video and digital media productions.

The 2024 Prix Europa awards were announced at a ceremony in the German capital on Friday.
