"Today, a minor fire broke out in the administrative building of the National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ). Thanks to the quick response of emergency services, the situation was quickly brought under control," was stated in an official message on social media on Wednesday.
„There is no radiological threat”, said Karol Kroć, spokesperson for the Mazovian State Fire Service, to Polish Radio.
"In no way were any facilities related to nuclear energy involved in our operations or threatened. Protective measures are still underway," added Kroć.
Karol Kierzkowski, press officer for the Polish State Fire Service, confirmed that the fire was contained. Forty firefighters, using ten fire trucks, are still on-site.
The fire and explosion occurred in the basement of the educational building where research was being conducted. Part of the premises was rented by an external company.
The cause and circumstances of the incident are still being investigated using thermal imaging cameras.
"The fire broke out in a laboratory far from the nuclear reactor," confirmed Otwock Mayor Jarosław Magierowski on Facebook.
The politician reassured local residents that the situation is now under control and there is no radiological threat.

The National Centre for Nuclear Research, located in the Świerk district of Otwock, is about 30 kilometers southeast of Warsaw.
