According to the government in Athens, the blaze, which began a week ago, prompted the biggest evacuation in Greece’s history.

In a bid to reassure the families of the tourists caught in the blaze, Poland’s Deputy Foreign Minister Paweł Jabłoński on Monday told Polish Radio that the evacuation is underway and as the situation remains precarious, Warsaw is closely monitoring the events on the island.

“All Polish citizens who were on organised trips have been successfully evacuated and relocated to secure locations… A considerable number of Poles have been moved to alternative hotels, while others sought shelter in temporary facilities to escape the blaze,” Jabłoński said.

“Interestingly enough, some of them have already returned to their original accommodations in areas where the fire has been somewhat contained. Nevertheless, the overall situation remains highly critical," Jabłoński added.

Radio Poland’s Michał Owczarek has the story above.
