On Thursday, the Polish government adopted a resolution to ensure the safe participation of guests in the ceremonies planned for January 27, 2025, marking International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the 1945 liberation of the Nazi Auschwitz concentration camp.
An aide to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told The Times of Israel on Thursday that he currently has no plans to attend the commemoration, after an aide to Polish President Andrzej Duda confirmed that President Duda had asked Prime Minister Donald Tusk to ensure Netanyahu's safety.
Israeli President to skip Auschwitz anniversary, Education Minister to attend
According to Israeli media, Israeli President Isaac Herzog will not attend the ceremony in Poland, but Education Minister Yoav Kisch will be present, confirmed by the ministry's spokesperson, as reported by Gazeta Wyborcza.
The newspaper notes that the event will have a lower diplomatic status, despite being the last milestone anniversary attended by living former prisoners.
Presidential Palace behind plot to undermine Tusk? Netanyahu issue sparks controversy
On January 9, the Polish government adopted a resolution to ensure the safe participation of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, despite the arrest warrant issued for him by the International Criminal Court.
Sebastian Kaleta, a member of the right-wing Law and Justice party (PiS), accuses the government of selectively treating international court rulings, criticizing the application of decisions by the Court of Justice of the European Union and the European Court of Human Rights, while ignoring the decisions of the International Criminal Court.
Witold Zembaczyński from the ruling Civic Coalition (KO) in Poland argues that the whole matter is a scheme orchestrated by the Presidential Palace to frustrate the government's supporters, emphasizing what was confirmed by an Israeli newspaper – that the Israeli Prime Minister has no intention of coming to Poland.
Similar conclusions were drawn by Bartosz T. Weliński in an article in Friday's Gazeta Wyborcza. He states that "the only rational explanation for this unbelievable event, which began at the Presidential Palace," is an intrigue against Donald Tusk.
