In a special message to mark the Day of Poles Abroad, Czaputowicz said: “On this day Poles across the country join their thoughts in a special way with those who, while being part of the Polish nation, have found their new home abroad.”
He added: “I’d like to express my great respect and thanks to all those who, despite difficulties and the distance, have not abandoned contact with their homeland and have not forgotten the tongue of their forefathers, transmitting Polishness to subsequent generations.”
The foreign minister said that, amid the global coronavirus outbreak, “we’re proud of the attitude of our countrymen and women who are organising help for those in need in the fight against the epidemic.”
He praised Polish doctors and nurses employed in hospitals across the world who are “working with enormous dedication.”
Czaputowicz said the foreign ministry in Warsaw supported the efforts of Poles living abroad under the #Polonia4Neighbours initiative.
“It shows that Poles are sensitive and selfless neighbours. For this solidarity we thank you sincerely,” he said in his message.
“We want Poles abroad to be bold in undertaking new challenges and bring an important contribution to the communities in which they live. We see a direct relation between the achievements and position of Poles in individual countries and the success and prestige of Poland on the international arena,” he added.
As well as being the Day of Poles Abroad, Saturday is also Poland’s Flag Day, and citizens are being urged to hang out the national red-and-white colours in a display of patriotism.
