The Ukrainian government on Wednesday signed a document under which America’s Louisiana Natural Gas Exports company would help supply US LNG to the country, the Polish state news agency reported.
It cited Ukraine’s acting energy minister Olga Buslavets as saying that the project "provides for exploring the possibility of diversifying natural gas supplies through long-term deliveries of liquefied gas and the development of a cross-border gas infrastructure” between Ukraine and the EU.
Ukraine expects to import at least 5.5 billion cubic metres of US LNG a year over a period of at least two decades as part of efforts to reduce Ukraine's dependence on Russian gas, according to reports.
The PAP news agency cited a Ukrainian parliamentarian as saying that the memorandum also provides for the development of gas infrastructure between Ukraine and Poland.
According to a Ukrainian business website, the infrastructure project could in part be financed by the United States and the EU, the Polish news agency reported.
In March, Ukraine’s deputy energy and environment minister Konstantyn Chyzhyk reportedly announced that Washington and Kiev had agreed plans to supply 6 to 8 billion cubic metres of liquefied gas per year to Ukraine via terminals in Poland.
