The Polish defence ministry said in a tweet that the talks "will focus on the situation in the eastern part of Europe, in the face of Russia's aggression against Ukraine and its consequences for Euro-Atlantic security."

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said ahead of the meeting that the alliance needed to reset its military posture "for this new reality."

He told reporters that NATO defence ministers meeting at the alliance's headquarters in the Belgian capital would "start an important discussion on concrete measures to reinforce our security for the longer term, in all domains."

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin told reporters in Brussels on Wednesday that NATO allies would continue to send defensive weapons to Ukraine and were unanimous in supporting Kyiv.

According to the Reuters news agency, NATO was set to tell its military commanders on Wednesday to draw up plans for new ways to deter Russia following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, including more troops and missile defences in eastern Europe.

While in Brussels on Wednesday, Poland's Błaszczak was scheduled to hold a series of bilateral talks with his counterparts from a number of NATO countries, including France and Lithuania, reporters were told.
