Mateusz Morawiecki’s words came at a nationwide youth conference on Saturday, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
Addressing the gathering in Warsaw, the PM said that “Poland has shown a big heart and great organisational skills” to welcome people fleeing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Meanwhile Ukrainian refugees, “through their work, are working for Poland, too,” contributing taxes and social insurance premiums, Morawiecki added.
The PM noted that with Ukrainian women and children finding shelter in Poland, Ukrainian men are fighting for their country, "and for our freedom, too, because we would have been [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s next target, had he quickly defeated Ukraine, as was his plan.”
‘A friendship that will last for many decades’
Morawiecki said that the events of recent weeks could “forge a friendship between our nations that will last for many decades.”
Saturday was day 87 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Poland on Saturday reported it had welcomed 3.5 million refugees fleeing Russia’s war on Ukraine.
