After the resignation of foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba in September 2024, Andrii Sybiha was nominated by president Zelenskyy to succeed him and Ukraine's (unicameral) parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, has confirmed the nomination.

Sybiha worked as a diplomat in Poland in the years 1998-2002 and 2008-2012 and speaks Polish well as a result, as Poland's foreign minister Radosław Sikorski discovered in his first official conversation with his new counterpart:

Sikorski tweeted: "The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine held his first conversation with me in his new official capacity. We spoke in Polish."
