Google Maps will begin displaying the “Gulf of Mexico” as the “Gulf of America” for users in the United States once the U.S. Geographic Names System is officially updated, the company has said.

The name will remain “Gulf of Mexico” for users in Mexico, and outside those two countries, both names will appear.

On Friday, the Trump administration’s Interior Department announced it had officially changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, and restored the name of North America’s highest peak from Denali back to Mount McKinley.

Trump mandated the name changes as part of several executive actions shortly after taking office on January 20, fulfilling a campaign pledge.

“As directed by the President, the Gulf of Mexico will now officially be known as the Gulf of America and North America’s highest peak will once again bear the name Mount McKinley,” the Interior Department said in a statement last week.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, earlier in the month, jokingly proposed renaming North America “Mexican America,” referencing a historic term used on an early map of the region.
