The fire engulfed a warehouse storing waste materials used for alternative fuel production, including plastics, textiles, and wood, as well as a nearby storage area, according to the Provincial Crisis Management Center in Katowice.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the police, with a fire expert involved. Surveillance footage from the facility has been secured. Initial damage is estimated between 1 million and 1.2 million PLN (up to €281,124).
According to Aneta Gołębiowska, spokeswoman for the Silesian Fire Service, the fire was reported around 9 PM on Wednesday and was not fully controlled until around 4 AM the following day.
Update on Koniecpol fire: no air hazards detected, precautionary measures advised
Mayor of Koniecpol, Ryszard Suliga, stated that the facility is close to residential and public buildings. Although atmospheric tests did not reveal any danger, local authorities advised residents to keep windows closed and to shorten or cancel school and preschool activities.
Silesian Voivode Marek Wójcik reported that, despite significant smoke, measurements taken by the chemical firefighting unit showed no dangerous substances in the air. He noted that the same facility had two fires in 2019 caused by spontaneous combustion, and a similar cause might be involved this time.
Sanitary and epidemiological services, after checking nearby water sources and drinking water supplies, found no hazardous substances but will continue monitoring in the coming days.
