This program was introduced in response to residents' requests for more environmentally friendly burial options. This particular area not only serves as a tribute to the deceased but also promotes local biodiversity.
The concept was proposed by Łukasz Sęk, the current Deputy Mayor of Krakow, who in 2023 submitted a formal request to the city council.
As a result, a designated area was established where people can choose eco-conscious burial practices, such as planting memory trees. This effort aligns with the city's larger environmental sustainability goals.
The Municipal Cemetery Authority noted that it addresses the increasing demand for green burial alternatives.
According to lovekrakow.pl, access to the burial site is through a wooden gate, marked by a stone inscribed with "Memory Trees," and the deceased can only be honored with biodegradable urns made from natural materials like wood or wicker, while the memorial can be marked with either a natural stone or a wooden plaque, as no concrete or metal elements are allowed.

With this initiative, Krakow joins other cities that promote sustainable burial options. As All Saints' Day, also known as the Day of the Dead, approaches in Poland on November 1st - celebrated shortly after Halloween in the West - it’s a fitting opportunity to reflect on contemporary burial methods.
