The overall crime rate in Poland decreased last year, but certain offenses such as robberies were more numerous than in 2023, the Polish daily Rzeczpospolita has reported.

A total of 439,000 crimes were recorded nationwide last year, 44,000 fewer than in the previous year.

The number of thefts, break-ins and murders dropped, with car thefts becoming particularly less frequent.

However, robberies and assaults negatively impacted the overall statistics.

Among the most shocking incidents were the brutal murder and rape of a 25-year-old Belarusian woman in Warsaw, and a horrifying attack in the southeastern town of Łańcut, where a businessman was tortured by assailants who poured boiling water over him.

An adjustment in the theft threshold from PLN 500 to PLN 800 (EUR 188, USD 192) in 2023 may have influenced the statistics, as some offenses were classified as misdemeanors rather than crimes, Rzeczpospolita reported.
