The IDEAS Research Institute, jointly overseen by the Ministry of Digital Affairs and the Ministry of Defense, aims to give Poland a competitive edge in AI research and development.

Digital Affairs Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski  announced the institute’s formation on Tuesday, emphasizing its role in attracting top Polish scientists with competitive salaries.

"We are creating a home for Polish researchers who will have one mission: to make Poland a leader in Europe," Gawkowski said.

Deputy Digital Affairs Minister Dariusz Standerski said that the new research institute "can become one of the pillars of Poland’s digital transformation, significantly influencing our position in the world of new technologies."

"We are committed to attracting the best artificial intelligence specialists to harness their potential and develop innovative solutions that will strengthen Poland’s position in the technological race," Standerski added.

The initiative comes as AI plays an increasingly crucial role in modern warfare and security.

Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stressed the importance of AI in military operations, saying that future battlefields will be managed using AI-driven planning and strategic analysis systems.

"Every conflict will increasingly rely on AI, and those who fail to adopt this technology will lose out," Kosiniak-Kamysz warned, adding that AI will also be used for training soldiers.

The institute will focus on research areas such as machine vision, computer graphics and natural language processing, with applications in defense, public administration and sustainable urban development.

Research programs will be regularly assessed by a scientific council.

The government has allocated PLN 20 million (around USD 5 million) to support the institute’s initial operations, including registration, structuring and the preparation of its first research projects.

Recruitment for scientific leaders and research staff is expected to begin soon.

Piotr Sankowski, an internationally recognized AI expert, has been appointed to lead the institute. He previously founded and headed IDEAS NCBR, an AI research center under Poland’s National Centre for Research and Development, from 2021 to 2024.

Over the coming months, the institute is set to expand rapidly, with further details on its budget, leadership and main location to be finalized.

The establishment of the institute was first announced in October, with an initial launch date set for January. The final approval for its creation was issued at the end of last month.
