The two also discussed protectionism, climate policy, and tax mechanisms within the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) when they met in the German capital on Tuesday morning, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.
Morawiecki told reporters after the talks that he and Merkel both expected some tough negotiations on the European Union's next budget at a summit of leaders planned for February 20.
“I don’t expect much from these negotiations, but of course we will go into them with the good will to find a compromise,” he said, adding that Poland was particularly interested in cohesion policy.
He also named agricultural policy and the development of infrastructure among his country’s priorities in ongoing negotiations on the bloc’s common budget.
He told reporters that, during his talks with Merkel, he briefed the German leader on an idea floated by Polish Agriculture Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski that Brussels could simultaneously increase spending on climate and agricultural policy.
During his two-day visit to Germany, Morawiecki on Monday, together with Merkel, took part in an event commemorating the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi German Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp.
