The 53rd Pride of Poland auction, held on Sunday, featured 20 Arabian horses, mainly from Polish state stud farms in Janów Podlaski, Michałów and Białka, the forsal.pl website has reported.
Bidders at the event in Janów Podlaski could choose from 16 mares and four stallions, according to officials.
Esmeraldia fetches EUR 400,000
Esmeraldia, a nine-year-old bay mare from Michałów, fetched the highest price, going to a French buyer for EUR 400,000.
Another horse from Michałów, a seven-year-old auburn mare named Poganinka, was sold for EUR 220,000, in the day’s the second-biggest transaction.
Euzona, an 11-year-old silver mare from Janów Podlaski, also fetched EUR 220,000, officials told reporters.
In all, 14 horses were sold for a combined EUR 1,596,000, organisers announced.
“This sum has exceeded our expectations,” said Andrzej Wójtowicz, a senior official in charge of Poland’s state stud farms. He described the auction as "a big success.”
Pride of Poland attracted 40 bidders from various countries, including France, Germany, Iran, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sweden and Switzerland, according to officials.
The auction crowned the 44th Polish National Arabian Horse Show, which featured 120 horses from state and private breeders.
The show was won by El Esmera, a mare from Michałów, organisers said.
