Szajowska, who was born on February 12, 1911, was declared Poland's oldest after the death last week of Tekla Juniewicz, who passed away in the southern city of Gliwice at the age of 116.

Szajowska was born in Lwów (now Lviv in Ukraine), where she completed piano and vocal studies at the city’s Music Conservatory.

Having moved to Kraków after World War II, she continued her musical education and subsequently taught piano performance at the local Experimental Music Studio.

Her students included future famous conductor Antoni Wit, according to a Kraków daily.

Women dominate among Poland’s centenarians, with Elżbieta Rogala in second place (at 110 years, 289 days), and Józefa Ciesielewska in third (110 years, 166 days), according to the daily.

The oldest Polish man, Kazimierz Klimczak, is in 20th place on the list (at 108 years, 185 days).

Marian Fuks is in 27th place (107 years, 325 days), and Piotr Bogorodź is 39th (107 years, 78 days).
