Ukrainian outlets report that Zelensky has considered holding elections in March 2024 per the peacetime electoral calendar, however the majority of Ukrainians (62% according to recent polling) are against the election.
Arguments against holding the election are that the Ukrainian Constitution explicitly forbids elections under martial law, elections would detract from the war effort and would be logistically difficult to organise with so many Ukrainians displaced by the war.
Some, including a group within the Republican Party in the US, are using the debate about holding 2024 Ukrainian elections to justify their arguments to defund the Ukrainian military effort.
