SpaceX Falcon 9 debris found in Poland after uncontrolled reentry

On Wednesday, reports emerged of unidentified objects, possibly debris from SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket, being found near Poznań in western Poland.

POLSA confirmed that between Tuesday night and early Wednesday, an uncontrolled reentry of a Falcon 9 R/B rocket stage occurred over Polish territory. The reentering part of the rocket weighed approximately four tons.

The rocket was launched on February 1 from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California as part of SpaceX’s Starlink Group 11-4 mission.

Missed email delayed Falcon 9 debris warning, Polish officials investigate

To investigate the incident, the head of the Polish Space Agency, Grzegorz Wrochna, was urgently summoned to the Ministry of Development and Technology.

POLSA had notified the government about the Falcon 9 debris on Tuesday, but the message was sent to an inactive email address and never reached officials.

In response, Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz instructed Minister Paszyk to clarify the situation.

Falcon 9 debris confirmed in Poland as another rocket reentry expected tonight

During the night, bright flashes were observed in the Polish sky, confirming the uncontrolled reentry of the Falcon 9 rocket stage.

Around 9:00 AM, a composite tank-like object was found in Komorniki, near Poznań, and additional fragments were discovered in other locations. SpaceX has verified their authenticity.

Later tonight, another commercial rocket fragment, launched from New Zealand on February 8, is expected to reenter Earth’s atmosphere over Poland.

As reported by Jacek Dobrzyński, spokesperson for the Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration and the Minister-Coordinator of Special Services, Poland has received information from EU structures about a potential reentry of another object into Earth's atmosphere on Thursday, February 20, 2025, between 9:48 AM and 9:56 PM.

The reentry could occur over 12 European countries. The object is part of a launch vehicle from a commercial mission by the company Kinesis.

51-second flyby: Rocket fragment to pass over Poland

According to Karol Wójcicki, a popular astronomy enthusiast among Polish internet users, it will pass over western Poland between 8:31 PM and 8:31:51 PM, lasting only about 51 seconds, entering from the south over Jelenia Góra in the southwest of the country and exiting north over Świnoujście into the Baltic Sea.
