The survey by researcher CBOS, which calculated body mass index, found that only one in seven obese Poles had been on a diet during the last year.

Body mass index is calculated by dividing a person’s weight in kilograms by the square of their height in metres.

The CBOS study was carried out last month on a random sample of 1,077 Polish adults.

Obesity has been linked to a range of diseases including cardiovascular disorders and cancer.

Experts warned last year that Polish kids were growing fatter faster than anywhere else in Europe because of a combination of a lack of physical activity and bad eating habits.
