Professor Robert Flisiak, who heads the Polish Society of Epidemologists and Infectious Disease Doctors, summarised the situation: "We may say this is no longer COVID-19, but COVID-22 - a milder disease."
However, though he stated that the symptoms of Omicron are less severe than Delta's, it is very difficult to predict the course of the new wave of infections.
Those who have recovered from COVID in the first wave and those who have been fully vaccinated (including the booster) are protected against serious illness, Professor Fisiak continued. He added, however, that research has confirmed that the over 60s continue to be at risk and this group should take a fourth dose as soon as this is possible in Poland.
The fourth dose is already available for the over 80s and Professor Flisiak recommended they take the fourth dose without delay. He also recommended that the over 60s and those with lower immunity levels wear masks indoors, especially in crowded areas.
"The effectiveness of wearing masks in reducing the risk of infection is obvious and scientifically proven. There should no longer be any doubt about that," Professor Fisiak added.
