Hans Kluge, the regional WHO director for Europe, has recommended that European countries reintroduce masks and accelerate vaccination and booster drives - to avoid more serious restrictions in the coming autumn.

If these steps are not taken now, health care systems in Europe may be overburdened in the coming months as the COVID levels rise again.

Kluge also said that the preventative measures were also necessary because he did not think European societies would tolerate another "hard lockdown".
