With Thursday, August 15, a public holiday, many Poles took Friday off to enjoy another long weekend in the country this year.

Officers said they stopped 1,451 drunk drivers during the four-day break from work.

Around 4,500 police were out on the roads each day during the long weekend in a bid to improve safety, Robert Opas from the country’s General Police Headquarters (KGP) said on Monday.

A total of 1,893 people were killed and 24,125 injured in 20,936 accidents on Polish roads throughout last year, according to police data.
