In a trilingual message posted on his website, the Polish president said: "Rosh Hashanah traditionally unites the Jewish community in shared celebrations.

"In this special time of pensiveness and reflection on the passing year, accompanied by the traditional sound of the shofar, you send each other best greetings and hopeful wishes:  'May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year.'"

He added: "Likewise, I would like to extend to the entire Jewish community in Poland my best wishes for your prosperity, health and peaceful experiencing of these special moments.

"May this New Year's celebration take place in a pleasant atmosphere, bringing you contentment and satisfaction with your so–far achievements. May it be an occasion for spiritual reassurance, giving you new strength, comfort and allow you to forget your daily worries.

"It is my sincere wish that you will continue to fulfill your plans while contributing to the development of our homeland and building its prosperous future. May positive thoughts stay with you throughout the New Year and internal strength help overcome all hardships.

"May you have a good New Year – full of comfort and peace."

The Jewish New Year is a two-day celebration. This year it began at sunset on Wednesday, Oct. 2, and ends at sunset on Friday, Oct. 4.
