The 24-year-old Pole, ranked world No. 37 by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), saw off Canadian player Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 7-6 in their round-of-32 encounter on Monday.
Up next for Hurkacz in the men's singles competition at the tournament is another Canadian, Milos Raonic.
In the women's singles, Poland’s Iga Świątek was knocked out of the Miami Open in the third round on Saturday by Ana Konjuh of Croatia. The rising Polish tennis star lost 4-6, 6-2, 2-6.
The 2021 Miami Open began on March 22 and runs until April 4.
